A machine for operating on shoe soles (including insoles) consists of a conveyer system adapted to feed individual shoe soles, appropriately orientated along it, and which has mounted thereon at suitably spaced stations along 1 the conveyer system a number of means for automatically performing different operations on the soles as they are fed through the stations. The conveyor system may be a pair of endless chains arranged one above the other and having projecting members so as to grip the soles between them; a plurality of pairs of co-operating rollers or a combination of the two. The apparatus arranged along the conveyer may be selected from the following: edge skiving apparatus, edge bevelling apparatus, edge trimming apparatus, edge cleaning apparatus, inking apparatus, apparatus for reducing the thickness of the soles at appropriate areas, apparatus for stamping the size on the soles, adhesive applying apparatus, and apparatus for forming channels in the soles to receive shank stiffeners. The machine also includes means for feeding the soles from a stack to the conveyer system. , In the example described' (Fig. 1) the machine includes feed means A, size stamping apparatus C, roller conveyer B, chain conveyer D and edge skiving apparatus E. The insoles I are held in a stack by guide rods 12 and the lowermost insole is moved forwardly along a feed table 5 by a reciprocating member 13. A die 33 in a die holder 29, 30 is operated by a piston and cylinder 28 to stamp the size on the insole. The insole then passes between rollers 23, 24 which feed it to the conveyer D. The conveyer D consists of two endless chains 36, the upper chain 36 having sets of plates 38 carrying rollers 39 and the lower chain 36 having blocks 40. The insole is gripped between the rollers 39 and blocks 40 and is carried past the edge skiving apparatus E. The edge skiving apparatus E consists of two rotating blades 59, (Fig. 4) one each side of the apparatus, carried by arms 54 which can rotate about shafts 57. Each arm 54 is urged inwardly by a piston and cylinder so that the tool automatically follows the contour of the insole. The edge of the insole is supported by a feed wheel 65 (Fig. 4) mounted on a bracket 64 on the arm 54. At the end or the conveyer D the insole is released and drops into a suitable receptacle.
