Abstract

1,173,010. Container handling apparatus. WALTER GOTELL Ltd., and BRITISH RAILWAYS BOARD. 15 March, 1968 [15 Dec., 1966; 21 Feb., 1967], Nos. 56290/66 and 8134/67. Heading B8H. A container handling apparatus comprises a gantry with a pair of feet 4 at each end which support four columns 5 that carry a pair of I- beams 6 interconnected by a further pair of I-beams 7 and braced by struts 8. Castors 9 are fitted to the feet 4. In use the gantry is raised by screw jacks (10), Fig. 2 (not shown). A main carriage consisting of a pair of I-beams 11 interconnected by end bars 12 is mounted on rollet 14 for movement along the I-beams 6 by a ram complex 15. At each end of the main carriage is a subsidiary carriage consisting of a box frame 18, upper members 19 of which can slide along the I-beams 11. A double ram 20 is arranged to move the two subsidiary carriages symmetrically about the centre of the main carriage. Each sub-carriage frame 18 supports the cylinders of two rams 22 the rods of which support a crosshead 23 in the form of an I-beam. A pair of legs 24 is suspended from blocks 25 at each end of the crosshead 23 on rollers 26 movable by one of a corresponding pair of rams 27. Each leg 24 has an inwardly projecting lug or shoe 28 for use in engaging a container 34. In typical use the apparatus transfers the container 34 from a stillage 33 to a railway truck 32 lifting being carried out by extending the rams 22 to raise the crossheads 23 and thus the four legs 24. Each leg 24 is pivoted at 29 and the lower part can be swung upwards to a horizontal position.
