Abstract

1,172,820. Winding a skein of threads. PLUTTE, KOECKE & CO. 28 Dec., 1966 [28 Dec., 1965], No. 57997/66. Headings D1J and D1W. A skein of thread is wound on a rotating spool having a conical or pyramidal portion 6 by causing the point of winding to oscillate relative to -the spool in the axial direction of the spool while at the same time undergoing a net axial displacement relative to the spool, winding being started on the conical or pyramidal portion. Either, as in Figures 1 and 3 the spool merely rotates and the thread guide 11 or 44 is caused both to oscillate and to move axially, or else as in Figure 4 the thread guide causes the thread only to oscillate and the spool is caused by means of a hydraulically operated cylinder 66-72 to move in the axial direction. Preferably the thread feeds through slots 48 (Fig. 3) in wheels 49 which correspond to the oscillatory displacement A. The wheels rotate with shaft 37 which rotates with the spool. The shaft 37 is thrust in the axial direction B by a screw shaft 50 rotating through gearing 54, 57, 58 and 59 with the spool. Several reels can be wound on one spool, the spool having a conical or pyramidal portion for each reel. The reels are preferably wound on top of a puckered cover arranged over the spool, the cover length being two or three times the length of spool covered. For easy removal of the cover it is cut and drawn off the spool over conical portions 16 and 13.
