Abstract

[Also in Division D1] A web-reel support comprises a fixed post 5 upon which is keyed a sleeve 7 having a conical portion 8. The reel 11 is clamped on a sleeve 17 between a plate 19 and packing rings 21 and 22 by a retaining nut 18. An inner sleeve 24 screwed to the sleeve 17 has a recessed portion in which the outer ring 25 of a ball-bearing 14 is retained by a locking ring 26. The inner ring 13 of the bearing 14 is held against the conical portion 8 when a pawl 28 of a brake plate 27 with a lining 30, is slid over sleeve 7 to engage ratchets 29. The sleeve 7 can be moved axially on the post 5 against the force of spring 9 by a hand nut 10, thereby transversely registering the reel 11. With this arrangement, the pressure between the retaining nut 18 and the brake lining 30 varies proportionally with the weight of the web-reel, thereby controlling the web tension as the web roll diameter decreases.
