Abstract

1,172,138. Aerating liquids. BENTLEY LABORATORIES. 20 Nov., 1967 [12 Dec., 1966], No. 52649/67. Heading B1C. [Also in Division A5] The bubbler assembly of a blood oxygenator device, wherein films of blood in bubble form are produced by directing oxygen into a stream of venous blood (thereby transferring oxygen to, and releasing CO 2 from, the blood), comprises (a) a hollow elongated housing adapted to be positioned in use to provide an internal chamber for confining the flow of blood bubbles in a predetermined path, (b) inlet means for venous blood at one end of the housing communicating with the internal chamber, (c) outlet means at the other end of the housing for the passage of blood bubbles outwardly of the bubbler assembly and (d) oxygen inlet means disposed adjacent to the blood inlet means, the oxygen inlet means including wall members defining an oxygen inlet chamber adapted for connection to a source of oxygen under pressure, one portion of these wall members being so positioned relatively to the blood inlet means that blood entering the blood inlet means will flow over this portion, which is provided with a plurality of minute apertures to direct jetting streams of oxygen therethrough from the oxygen inlet chamber into the venous blood flowing over the apertures to form blood bubbles which flow through the internal chamber to the outlet means. In Fig. 4, bubbler assembly 28 comprises oxygen inlet 64 (leading into annular oxygen inlet chamber 86) and blood inlet 63, the oxygen passing through the plurality of minute apertures in cone-shaped wall member 90 to form the blood bubbles which pass up the passageway 72, along passageway 73, down passageway 74, through opening 97, up passageway 75 and out through outlet means 67. Subsequently the stream of blood bubbles is converted to a stream of oxygenated blood and the temperature of the bubble-free blood is adjusted in a heat exchanger (see Division A5).
