Abstract

1,171,965. Shaft seals. GEORGE ANGUS & CO. Ltd. 15 Aug., 1968 [6 Sept., 1967], No. 40689/67. Heading F2B. A face seal for use between two relatively rotatable members, e.g. a rotary shaft and its housing, comprises a ring 1 of microcellular polyurethane having a holding portion at one end for securing it to one of the members and a sealing face 3 at the other end for rubbing sealing contact with the other member. The radial cross-sectional area of the ring is smaller at the face sealing end than at the holding portion and the face sealing end is offset towards the outer periphery of the ring. The holding portion is surrounded by a metal or plastics casing ring 2. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), a face sealing ring (4) of solid polyurethane is adhesively secured or bonded to the sealing face end of the ring (1). The seal material may be impregnated with a molybdenum disulphide or silicone oil filler.
