Abstract

[Also in Division F4] In a process and apparatus for freezedrying frozen particles of material, e.g. meat, shrimps, fruit or the water-soluble components of roasted coffee beans, tea extract, tomato soup or paste, chicken soup, fruit juices or like foods, to preserve the material, the frozen particles are passed through an evacuated chamber 25 from an upper air lock 14 to a lower hopper 31 and air lock 32 by passage along a series of superposed vibratory trays 21, the surfaces of which are cooled to below 0‹C. by conduits or coils 29 embedded within or attached to the trays. Ice is sublimated from material on each tray as by conductive, dielectric or micro-wave heating, or by radiant heat of a wave-length greater than 2-5 microns from plates 24, which may be heated electrically and/or by heat from quartz electric lamps having tungster filaments. The vapour is generated at a specified rate and is condensed on cryoplate condensers 20 at a specified flow rate.
