Abstract

1,169,631. Ship stabilizer. MUIRHEAD & CO. Ltd. 22 Feb., 1968 [8 May, 1967], No. 21233/67. Heading B7M. A passive stabilizer comprises a plurality of arrangements having two partially liquid-filled tanks positioned at respective sides of a marine craft and intercommunicating through a liquidfilled channel, air passing between the tanks of all arrangements through an air duct to control the flow of liquid between the tanks. In Fig. 1 there are two arrangements, an upper arrangement comprising tanks 7, 8 connected by liquid duct 10 and air duct 11 controlled by valves 12, 13. A lower arrangement comprises tanks 2, 3 connected by liquid duct 5 and having pipes 14, 15 connecting the respective air space with that of the tank above. Valves 17, 18 each have a closure member with a float to prevent water passing down the pipe 14, 15, the float being weighted to prevent closure of the valve by suction in the lower tank. Valves 12, 13 control the water displacement.
