Abstract

1,169,400. Percussive tools. G. A. BERGMAN. 14 Feb., 1967, No. 6999/67. Heading B4C. A percussive tool such as a drill or pick in which various tools may be inserted into a tool holder 24 comprises a mechanism for revolving the holder during drilling but adapted to prevent rotation during a pick operation, the mechanism having a blocking sleeve 22 which can be moved by an external control device 42 into a position in which the tool is rotated and a further position in which the tool is locked. The blocking sleeve is rotatably mounted, via bearings 24<SP>1</SP>, on a guide member 16 for the piston rod 18 of a hammer including a piston portion 10 of an internal combustion engine. The blocking sleeve is connected by means of a roller-type clutch 32 with a sleeve 30 having a dog 34 for engagement with a helical groove 36 in the piston rod 18. The tool holder is provided with a dog 38 for engagement with a groove 40 in the piston rod 18. The control device includes a rod 42 having a pair of catches 44 which are arranged to co-operate with grooves 46 formed in the blocking sleeve 22 and grooves 48 formed in the tool holder. In operation, in order to rotate the tool holder during reciprocations of the piston, the rod 42 is moved so as to engage the catches 44 with thegrooves 46 and to prevent rotation, the rod is turned to engage the catches with the grooves 48. The catches and grooves may be replaced by the teeth of a worm and worm-wheel. Rotation of the rod 42 also controls the flow of pressurized fluid to the tool member for clearing purposes.
