A toilet soap in bar form comprises 65-90% of sodium salts of fatty acids derived from tallow and oils of the palm kernel family in the ratio range of 1 : 1 to 6 : 1, 2À5-10% of a lotion which contains 1-5% of colloidal magnesium aluminium silicate, and optionally up to 10% fatty acid superfatting agent, any balance being essentially water. The lotion preferably consists of 10-40% of light mineral oil, 0À5-5% of lanolin, 0À2-4% of fatty alcohols of 10-18 C atoms, 1-10% of a soap emulsifier such as triethanolamine stearate, 1-5% of colloidal magnesium aluminium silicate and 36-87% water; and has a viscosity of 10-80 seconds at 70‹ F. as determined in a 5 c.c. Raymond Flow meter. The superfatting agent is suitably a distilled palm oil fatty acid. The soap bar may be made by preparing a sodium soap chip from a 1 : 1 to 6 : 1 mixture of tallow and an oil of the palm kernel family, amalgamating the soap chips with a previously prepared oil-in-water lotion emulsion containing 1-5% of colloidal magnesium aluminium silicate, followed by milling of the amalgamated mixture and plodding to produce a continuous plodder bar which is cut into individual bars.
