[Also in Division F2] The energy of a head-on collision is dissipated in bending seat fixing rods 23, so that the seat is swung forwardly, substantially about its frontal point of attachment to the vehicle floor, thus transmitting the peak deceleration, in attenuated form, to the head of the seat occupant via a body harness fixed to the seat. Spreader plates (27) may be bolted beneath the floor, to prevent the rods 23 from being torn loose. Alternatively the floor fastening may be by means of dished washers and nuts with spherical ends. In a form in which the seat is slidably adjustable in the fore and aft direction on the rods 23, a cross rod (20, Fig. 1, not shown) may be welded between rods 23 to provide additional points of attachment. Rods 23, instead of extending longitudinally may, alternatively, be arranged to extend transversely at the front and rear of the seat. In another form, the rods 23 are secured at the rear to height adjustment means bolted to the floor (Figs. 6-8, not shown). Latch 30 (Figs. 4a-c, not shown) is released, to allow backrest 71 to collapse over the seat, by means of connecting rods 47, 35, operated, on releasing catch 42, by inclining head-rest 41 forwardly.
