Abstract

1483567 Safety head rests for vehicles FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 17 June 1975 [26 June 1974] 25683/75 Heading A4J A vehicle headrest 1 pivots forwardly on sharp deceleration of the vehicle and then moves backwardly to dissipate the energy of impact of the head of an occupant as the occupant jerks backwards and strikes the headrest. On sharp deceleration of the vehicle a rivet 10 between the headrest support 2 and the seat back 6 is triggered to release the headrest support which then pivots forwardly about the bottom leg 8 of a torsion bar 5 until a stop 11 on the support abuts the seat back 6. During such pivoting a bolt 12 connected to the support through a pin and slot and normally held in a downward position by the upper leg 9 of the torsion bar moves upwardly until a detent 14 on the bolt engages the upper leg 9. Further forward pivoting of the headrest is prevented and energy of impact of the occupant with the headrest as the occupant is jerked backwards is dissipated by plastics deformation of the torsion bar.
