1,166,624. Polymeric aryl sulphones. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 16 Jan., 1967 [15 Oct., 1965], No. 43829/65. Heading C3R. Polymeric aryl sulphones having units of formula where Y is a direct link, -O-, -S-, a hydrocarbon radical or a radical of formula where Y<SP>1</SP> and Y<SP>11</SP> are direct links, -O-, -S- or a hydrocarbon radical and Z is -SO 2 -, -SO-or -CO-, are obtained by heating an aromatic monosulphonic acid of formula or an equimolar mixture of an aromatic compound of formula and an aromatic disulphonic acid of formula with a chloride or bromide of quinquevalent phosphorus, e.g. phosphorus pentachloride, phosphorus pentabromide, phosphoryl chloride or phosphoryl bromide. A Lewis acid may be added to the product of the reaction to form further polymer linkages by reaction between sulphonyl chloride or bromide groups terminating some of the polymer chains. In examples diphenyl ether sulphonated with chlorosulphonic acid is reacted with phosphoryl chloride; in one instance antimony pentachloride is added to cause further polymerization.
