Abstract
1436352 Phosphonitrilic chloride oligomers FMC CORP 28 Feb 1973 [6 March 1972] 9802/73 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions C2 and C3] A mixture of linear and cyclic phosphonitrilic chloride oligomers of formula where Z- is Cl- or PCl 6 - and n is on average at least 2 is obtained by reacting PCl 5 with NH 4 Cl (or NH 3 which provides NH 4 Cl) in an inert diluent, using at least 1 mol of PCl 5 and preferably 1 to 3 mols of PCl 5 , per mol of NH 4 Cl. In examples PCl 5 and NB 4 Cl are reacted in chlorobenzene using molar ratios of PCl 5 to NH 4 Cl of 1 : 1, 1À1 : 1, and 1À2 : 1 respectively, the PCl 5 being prepared by reacting 1 mol of PCl 3 with 1 mole of chlorine in chlorobenzene. In one example the reaction of the resulting PCl 5 with NH 4 Cl is carried out in the presence of magnesium chloride as catalyst to give a mixture of reduced linear content as compared to the uncatalysed reaction.
