Abstract

1,166,256. Gearing for stopping machinery; belt tensioning. ATKINS FULFORD Ltd. 16 Jan., 1967 [14 Oct., 1965], No. 43603/65. Headings F2L and F2Q. In an overload release mechanism for a belt or chain gear wherein a spring 10 normally acts through levers 8, 9b to maintain a drive between pulleys or sprockets 2, 3, the pulley or sprocket 3 is mounted on a lever 4 and is moved laterally on overload whereupon the upper end of the lever 4 rotates the lever 9b clockwise to bring the spring 10 to an overcentre position in which it acts on the lever 8 to disconnect the drive. As shown in a belt gear the spring 10 acts through a bellcrank 8 to press a tensioning pulley 7 against the belt 1. On overload the spring is moved over the bellcrank pivot whereupon the pulley 7 is moved away from the belt 1 to disconnect the drive. A handle 9a fast with the lever 9b resets the mechanism and may be used to effect manual disengagement of the drive. The overload at which disengagement occurs may be adjusted by adjusting the tension of the spring 10 at 12 or by adjusting the position of a stop 14 which the lever 9b normally abuts. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the chain of a chain gear is maintained tensioned by a spring pressed roller (17) and the drive is disengaged by a clutch. The spring normally acts through a lever (18) and link (20) to engage the clutch. On overload the spring is moved over the pivot point of the lever (18) which then acts through the link (20) to disengage the clutch.
