Abstract

1,166,106. Electrolytic purification of manganese. UGINE KUHLMANN. Nov. 1, 1966 [Nov. 3, 1965], No.48969/66. Heading C7B. Substantially pure manganese is prepared by refining an impure manganese alloy electrolytically in a confined atmosphere using a soluble anode of manganese alloy plunged into a molten bath which melts below 600‹C. and which contains by weight 1-20% manganese chloride, 10-59% NaCl and/or LICl, 40-70% CaCl 2 and/or BaCl 2 , 0-10% KCland 0-20% AlCl 3 , passing through the bath an electric current of 1-100 amp/dm<SP>2</SP> at a voltage of 0À1-3 volts. until at least a portion of the manganese from the anode has been deposited on the cathode, removing the cathode from the bath and draining off a portion of the remaining melt salts back into the electrolytic cell, cooling the cathode in free air, and separating the substantially pure manganese deposited on the cathode from the remainder of the salts collected on the cathode. The soluble anode used may be of ferro-manganese or carburized manganese. To recover the manganese from the salt magma present on the cathode first the salts of the magma and metal and then the manganese is melted under a protective layer of the melted salts and cast into a mould under the protective layer. The apparatus shown comprises a cylindrical cell 1 of mild steel, an external casing 2 of refractory insulating metal, an anodic assembly 5 comprising a number of cylindrical baskets 6 of perforated sheet containing the impure metal to be refined, a cathode which may be formed by a solid cylinder, hollow rod, a ribbed section, or multiple rods electrically and mechanically connected together, and as shown includes a disc 17 at its lower part to collect manganese crystals which become separated from the cathodic deposit. The anode assembly is supported from a flange 7 positioned between the lid 8 and cell flange 20 and separated therefrom by gaskets 10. An intermediary cell bottom 15 formed of perforated sheet backed by fine mesh screen may be removed from the cell by means of rods 16, to remove sludge and crystals dislodged from the cathode. The bath may be heated by an external heating resistance 3, by a gas or liquid fuel burner 4, or electrical heaters positioned within the bath. Using the latter form of heating the interior of the cell may be coated with ceramic material, e. g. of alumina or silicoalumina compounds. Cooling circuits 14 maintain the gaskets below their decomposition temperature.
