Abstract

1,164,819. Bearings; seals. D. A. ROSE. 17 Nov., 1966 [29 Nov., 1965], No. 51458/66. Headings F2A and F2B. In a railway vehicle axle box a seal comprises a body portion 18, from one side of which extend annular fins 26 and from the other side extend annular projections 28, 30, and a lip 22 at the inner edge of the seal having a recess 46. When the seal is positioned between walls 38, 40, Fig. 4, fins are flexed and their chamfered surfaces 42 abut wall 40, while the flat and curved surfaces of projections 30, 28 abut wall 38 and form a vacuum seal. Insertion of the axle causes lip 22 to flex so that flat surface 48 is perpendicular to the axle axis, and the lip is spaced from wall 38. Recess 46 for containing lubricant is formed in tapered end portion 56 of the lip. The seal is of neoprene impregnated with molybdenum disulphide.
