Abstract

1,164,213. Pipe joints. MANCAR-TRUST. 17 March, 1967 [23 March, 1966], No. 12594/67. Heading F2G. A pipe union for connecting plastics pipes comprises two partly-spherical cup-shaped members 3, 4 of glass fibre-reinforced plastics integral with or connected to pipes 1 and 2, a spherical core 6 having a diametral bore 5 received in the cup-shaped members, two retaining rings 9 and 10 each fitting over the outside of one of the cup-shaped members and drawn together by bolts 7 and 8 or springs, and sealing rings 11 and 12 retained in annular grooves in the cup-shaped members to seal the joint. The inner diameter of the retaining rings is greater than that of the pipes so that the pipes may be laid with their axes angularly displaced by up to 30 degrees. The arrangement also permits expansion of the angularly-displaced pipes to be accommodated. Both the pipes and the cup members may be made of glass fibre-reinforced plastics by winding impregnated rovings on a mandrel. The outer layers of the cup-shaped members are formed of longitudinal rovings overlaid with circumferentially-wound rovings. The spherical core may be made of steel, aluminium or hard-castable glass fibre-filled resin, and its diametral bore greater than the internal diameter of the pipes.
