Abstract

1,162,750. Working at specified temperatures. INTERNATIONAL NICKEL Ltd. 21 June, 1968 [10 July, 1967], No. 31676/67. Heading B3V. [Also in Division C7] Ruthenium or a binary alloy of ruthenium with up to 10% rhenium is hot drawn by preheating the metal to 1000-1300‹ C. and drawing it with the aid of a lubricant through a die that is at a temperature of 900-1050‹ C. The wire coated with semi-colloidal graphite is preheated in an electric resistance furnace containing an inert or reducing gas and drawn through a sintered tungsten carbide and cobalt die contained in an electric resistance furnace containing an inert or reducing atmosphere, e.g. H 2 . After drawing the wire is quenched by water. Intermediate annealing may be carried out between passes by induction heating the wire to 1800‹ C. in a 90% N 2 -10% H 2 atmosphere or heating in a resistance furnace at 1500‹ C. in an H 2 atmosphere. In examples, ruthenium and a 98% Ru-2% Re alloy are swaged at 1500‹ C. and hot drawn.
