Abstract

1,162,506. Treating synthetic fibres; threads for sewing. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 17 Feb., 1967, No. 7726/67. Headings D1G and D1P. A sewing thread is produced by applying to a multifilament continuous filament yarn formed from a linear, synthetic ,polymer, e.g. polyacrylonitrile, a polyamide, a polyester or a polyolefin such as polypropylene, the filaments of which have a flexural rigidity of 2.7 x 10<SP>-4</SP> to 14 x 10<SP>-4</SP> gram (centimeter)<SP>2</SP>, a finish which is (1) a mixture of 10% by weight of aluminium tristearate and 90% by weight of dimethyl polysiloxane, (2) methyl phenyl polysiloxane of 18,000 centipoises viscosity at 25‹C or (3) a mixture of methyl hydrogen siloxane and dimethyl siloxane, twisting the yarn to form a thread and then subjecting it to a heat treatment, the amount of finish applied to the yarn being 0.9-11% by weight. The heat treatment may comprise melting the finish upon the yarn, polymerising the finish on the yarn by thermally initiated polymerization or heat setting the twist. The thread preferably has a denier less than 1500, a twist multiplier of 2.4-4.3, the twist multiplier being equal to 2.54T #C in which T is the twist in turns/cm and C is the cotton count of the yarn, and a coefficient of kinetic friction at 316‹C. of 0.1-0.35.
