Abstract

1,162,188. Horticultural staging including an irrigating system E. W. HUGHES. 14 June, 1968 [19 May, 1967], No. 23359/67. Heading A1E. A staging unit 1 comprises a generally flat support plate 2 having perforated hollow ribs 3, 4 forming conduits for the supply and removal of fluids to and from the troughs formed between the ribs 3, 4. One group of ribs 3 is connected to a supply conduit 5, fluid entering the troughs through perforations 7 at the level of the support plate 2, excess fluid escaping via a return conduit 6 through perforations 8 near the tops of the ribs 4. In an automatic irrigation system, Fig. 2 (not shown), fluid (11) from a reservoir (12) is pumped into the conduit 5 by a pump (10). The return conduit (6) is connected to the reservoir (12) through a branched pipe (13), (14) including a valve (15), e.g. to control a carbon dioxide supply. A mechanical or electric programming control unit (16) operates the pump (10) and valve (15) in sequence, supplying fluid and carbon dioxide alternately to the troughs. The gas may be used to regulate the ambient temperature by being heated or cooled.
