Abstract

1,162,179. Machine tool details; milling. S. J. KAMINGA. 23 Dec., 1966 [3 Jan., 1966], No. 57746/66. Headings B3B and B3K. A workholder comprises jaws reciprocated between first and second positions by first actuator means, second actuator means for opening and closing the jaws and regulator means which control the reciprocation and activate the second actuator means to close the jaws as they reach the first position. Apparatus for receiving and clamping workpieces supplied from a magazine, conveying them past a tool e.g. a milling cutter, releasing them and then returning to repeat the cycle comprises jaws 20, 30 slidably mounted on waybars 12 and reciprocable together under the action of an actuating cylinder 24 and ram 23. A clamping cylinder 34 with a ram 35 is mounted on bars 32 extending from jaw 20 through the jaw 30 and operates to open and close the jaws. When moving to the left the jaws are open and adjustable stops 44 limit the travel of jaw 30 while a stop 54 causes workpiece locating fingers 51 to project from recesses in the jaw 30 when the jaws reach the left end position. A trip lever 66 mounted on jaws 20 is engageable with a sensor 64 and through a slight time delay controls the jaw closing action of cylinder 34 and ram 35. In its jaw closing position ram 35 operates a trip plunger 42 which through a sensor 62 initiates the feed of the jaws to the right. A plate 85 which is attached to the jaw 20 has a lost motion connection through nuts 83, 84 with a rod 82 of an hydraulic speed-control unit 80, the arrangement being such that initially feed is rapid and then slow as the workpiece passes the tool. The unit 80 includes two hydraulic compartments 86, 87, Fig. 16, connected by a restricted control passage 91 and a check valve 93, 94 which ensures that the speed regulating effect is only operative in the feed direction. A metering control 92 provides for adjustment of the speed-regulating effect. A sensor 65 operated by a trip arm 68 limits the stroke to the right and reverses the direction of the actuator 24 and a sensor 63 and trip arm 67 effect opening of the jaws immediately after reversal of direction to allow discharge by gravity of a finished workpiece. The sensors are adjustably located on bars at the side of the machine and may be hydraulic, pneumatic or electronic.
