Abstract

1,162,133. Loud-speakers. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 12 Sept., 1966 [11 Sept., 1965], No. 38872/65. Heading H4J. The cone 8 and spider 7 of a moving coil loudspeaker are attached to the coil former 3 by thermoplastic resin 6 which is initially caused by applied heat to flow, and is subsequently caused by removal of the applied heat to harden so as to form stable joints between the former 3, and the cone 8 and the spider 7. As shown, the former 3 (Fig. 1) is maintained in a central position with respect to the gap between magnetic poles 1 and 2 by a removable centring plug 5. Previously, the former 3 has been fitted on to an internal mandrel and dipped into heated thermoplastic synthetic resin. The spider 7 and cone 8 are fitted to the loud-speaker chassis prior to insertion of the speech coil 4 on the former 3. The plug includes facilities for heating the resin 6 and, on cooling, the spider 7 and cone 8 become secured by resin 6 to the former 3. The plug 5 is then removed. The resin 6 projects slightly beyond the end of the former 3 which enables a dust cover 9 to be attached by a heated tool. Alternatively, rings 10, 11 (Fig. 2) of thermoplastic resin are fitted round the former 3 to rest against the cone 8 and spider 7 respectively. Whilst the former 3 is maintained central the rings 10,11 are melted by heating a central plug, or by hot air directed to the rings 10, 11. Subsequently, a dust cap is fitted.
