Abstract

1,161,632. Controlling vehicles. J. PUIG. 1 Sept., 1966 [8 Sept., 1965; 18 Oct., 1965], No. 39089/66. Heading B7H. [Also in Division F1] During overrunning the mixture intake pipe is completely closed by plates 6, 6<SP>1</SP>, downstream of the throttle valve, the plates being controlled by an electromagnet 15<SP>1</SP> whose circuit includes a first means 5 responsive to throttle valve position and a second means 12 which re-opens the plates to prevent stalling when the engine speed drops to nothing. A stop 17 controlled by a device 13 responsive to vehicle speed prevents the plates opening beyond a partially open position until vehicle speed reaches a predetermined value. The means 5 comprises a plate 23, Fig. 7, freely pivotable on the throttle spindle and actuated through a friction clutch. When the accelerator pedal is depressed, plate 23 is moved away from abutment 24 and against abutment 25, breaking switch 5<SP>1</SP>, a toggle spring 33 ensuring rapid movement. When the pedal is released, plate 23 returns to close switch 5<SP>1</SP>, energizing electromagnet 15<SP>1</SP> to close plates 6, 6<SP>1</SP>. The vehicle speed responsive device 13 controls a switch in the circuit of electromagnet 14<SP>1</SP> controlling stop 17. The device 13 comprises an A.C. generator driven by the speedometer cable, the output of which is rectified and applied to the coil of a relay which closes the circuit of electromagnet 14<SP>1</SP> at a predetermined vehicle speed, withdrawing stop 17 to. allow plates 6, 6<SP>1</SP> to move to the full open position. The electromagnetic devices may be replaced by pneumatic or hydraulic actuating means. In Fig. 2 the vehicle speed responsive device 13 controls partial or full opening of a first restriction means 6, 6<SP>1</SP>, and the accelerator and engine speed-responsive devices 5, 12, control complete closing of a second restriction means 20. In Fig. 4 the device 13 controls the restriction plates 6, 6<SP>1</SP>, in the mixture conduit whilst the devices 5, 12, control closing or opening of a valve in the idle fuel passage of the carburetter.
