Abstract

In a space heating system, a tubular coil 15 placed in a chimney is traversed by the flue gases and air blown through the coil by a fan is heated, the heated air being delivered subsequently through grilles to the rooms of a building. The coil 15 is placed behind or above the fireback of a fireplace, as shown, or near the flue gas outlet of a coal, oil or gas-fired boiler. The coil may be fitted close to the periphery of the chimney. There may be more than one coil in the system, which may be connected to more than one flue gas source, and the air is passed through a filter (13, Fig. 1) before entering the coil. The coil or coils 15 may be made of ceramic material for industrial applications operating at a relatively high temperature.
