Abstract

1,161,431. Mass spectrometers. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 12 May, 1967 [17 May, 1966], No. 21825/66. Heading H1D. A spark-type mass spectrometer ion source in which at least one of the electrodes comprises sample material has provision for automatic continuous movement of at least one of the electrodes so as to spread the sparks over a larger area of the sample electrode. In Fig. 1 the electrodes 8 are rotated by D.C. motors 12 on which they are mounted. The electrodes may be rotated in the same or opposite directions and at the same or different speeds. Preferably the electrodes are rotated in the direction such that the areas from which sparks are drawn are moving towards the ion source slit. The motors 12 are energized by batteries 18. In another embodiment the insulators 6 are carried by rotatable shafts (30, Fig. 2) which are driven by A.C. or D.C. motors (32) whose rotors (34) are also carried by, or coupled to, the shafts, the stators 38 of the motors preferably being located outside the vacuum. In a further embodiment the motor (104, Fig. 3) is wholly outside the vacuum and drives the electrode holder (50) through a magnetic coupling (94) whose driven member (90) is enclosed within the vacuum by vacuumtight non-magnetic sleeve (108) between that member and the driving member which is carried by a shaft (96) connected to the motor (104) through a flexible drive (102). The position of the electrode holder (50) may be adjusted by a plurality of micrometer adjusters (78) carried by a plate (80) connected to the ion source chamber by means of a bellows seal (84). In another embodiment, Fig. 4, the sample holder 120 is vibrated in the y-direction under the see-saw movement of the rod 124 about the block 126. The rod 124 is connected via a bracket 140 to a vibrator motor 142, the outer end of the rod 124 vibrating about the points of adjustable fulcrum screws 146 which bear on V-shaped notches 148 in a mounting plate 134.
