Abstract

Compound or multi-stage piston pumps; piston pumps convertible into motors. - In a multi-cylinder engine in which one or more of the working cylinders can be converted temporarily into compressors, these cylinders are provided with means for throwing the normal admission and exhaust valves out of operation, and two or more cylinders may be used to compress gas in stages, In one form, Fig. 1, the fitting 2 is screwed into the sparking-plug socket of the cylinder and has a stop cock 6 and a T-piece 7, with an automatic inlet valve 8 and an automatic outlet valve 9 leading to a gas receiver 14. A pressure gauge 13 and a blow-off cock 16 may be fitted, and the sparking- plug 3 is inserted in a branch of the fitting. When the cylinder is to be used as a pump, the cock 6 is opened, the normal admission and exhaust valves 20, 21 are thrown out of action by turning aside hinged distance-pieces 24 on the valve tappets, and the sparkmg-plug is disconnected. The clearance in the cylinder 1 may be reduced by means such as an extension 31 on the piston, and one or more cylinder extensions, such as a coiled tube 5, may be put into communication with the cylinder by one or more cocks 4 when the cylinder is to act as a power cylinder. In place of the coiled tube 5, a cylindrical chamber of variable volume may be used, which is water-cooled or has cooling ribs. In a modification., two or more cylinders with cranks at 180‹ are utilized as a stage compressor by means of fittings shown in Fig. 3, the outlet valve 35 of the fitting 33 on one cylinder being connected to the inlet valve 34 of the fitting on another. The valves are controlled by springs 36, 38, the spring 36 on the inlet valve being adjustable. When the cylinder is to act as a power cylinder, the valves are locked, the valve 34 by screwing out the fitting 39, and the valve 35 by the screw stop 41. The gas or air compressed may be used in the engine or for lighting, heating vaporizers, starting the fires of gas producers, or other purposes
