Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A mitral valve prosthesis comprises a ring 1 having on its periphery a member 5 suitable to receive suture threads and having an annular valve seat 7, there being an arched cage 2 fitted to the ring and carrying an axially extending rigid rod 3 which terminates in the vicinity of the plane of the valve seat, and there being a disc member 4 slidably mounted on the rod for movement between a position in which it sealingly engages the valve seat and a position in which it is spaced from the valve seat. As shown, the member 5 is a braid of an exemplified synthetic plastics material held to the valve by a spring or collar member 6 and the remainder of the valve is of a stainless steel or an alloy material. The disc member 4 has a conical shape with a sleeve portion 8, and the cage 2 comprises (see also Figure 1, not shown) arch members in a cruciform arrangement. Suitable dimensions for the valve are given. In alternative valve constructions, the disc member is flat or part-spherical in shape and the cage comprises a less or a greater number of arch members.
