Abstract
1,159,975. Explosive compositions. SOC. NATIONALE DES PETROLES D'AQUITAINE. 5 Aug., 1966 [13 Aug., 1965], No. 35138/66. Heading C1D. [Also in Division F3] An explosive charge which does not require a primer for detonation comprises a pair of electrodes embedded in a compressed mixture of one or more of the explosives PETN, RDX, TNT, nitroglycerine, nitrocotton, and ammonium nitrate, 1-20% by weight of an oxidizable substance, and 1-20% by weight of another substance which is electrically conductive. The proportions are such that a voltage higher than 2000 volts has to be applied to detonate the mixture. The oxidizable substance may be Mg, Al, Ca, Sr, Ba, Zr, Be, Sb, Si, ferrosilicon, or Mg alloy in fine powder form. Suitable electrically conductive substances are graphite, silicon, naphthalene, iron or other heavy metal sulphide, or metal powders. The charge may be detonated by applying a D.C. potential of 2000 to 50,000 volts using a capacitor in series between a D.C. source and one of the electrodes (Fig. 3, not shown).
