Abstract

1,158,353. Glass manufacture. BENDIX CORP. 9 Aug., 1967 [16 Aug., 1966], No. 36527/67. Heading C1M. [Also in Division H1] To form an array of channels for electron multipliers, a core member such as a wire of metal, plastics or glass is coated with a glass containing reducible metal oxides; a plurality of the coated wires are assembled to form an array and heated to fuse the glass coatings; the wires are removed respectively by etching, burning out or boiling in deionized water to form a plurality of channel openings in the array and the array is treated in a reducing atmosphere to obtain a secondary electron emissive resistive coating on the interior surfaces of the channels. The wires may be coated by drawing a glass tube over the wire or, as disclosed, by passing through a slurry of glass particles which are then dried and fired. Fusing of the array is preferably under pressure to ensure the absence of voids. The glass coating may be bonded together either by an epoxy cement or by waterglass. A water soluble glass for the core is given as B 2 O 3 40-50; Na 2 O 17-20; and SiO 2 34-40; and the main glass for coating as PbO 61; SiO 2 32 and BaCO 3 7, all in weight percentages. Part of the PbO reduces to Pb to give the required interior resistive coating.
