Abstract

1,158,330. Tar bonded basic refractories. DOLOMITWERKE G.m.b.H. 21 Sept., 1966 [21 Sept., 1965], No. 42154/66. Heading C1J. Refractory furnace lining mouldings are obtained by mixing burnt, sintered, or molten dolomite, magnesite, lime or their mixtures with a tar like substance moulding, and day heating to 200-450‹ C. the heating time being on or between curves A and C in the figure, depending on the temperature, finely divided coal, coke, graphite, soot or active carbon can be added to the refractory material and/or tar which can also contain a polymerization or condensation catalyst. Fibre-like fugitive materials can be included so that drainage channels for the volatiles are formed during the heat treatment. High pressure is used if a higher carbon content is required in the mouldings and a low pressure used if easier removal of the volatiles is desired. An increased carbon content of the outer layers is obtained by spraying with liquid tar before heating, and after heating the mouldings can be protected with an organic coating to give a smooth surface. The refractories can also contain Cr 2 O 3 , ZrO 2 , Fe 2 O 3 or MnO 2 .
