Abstract

1,157,994. Steering ships. F. W. PLEUGER. 20 Oct., 1966 [27 Oct., 1965], No. 47031/66. Heading B7V. A transverse jet propulsion steering device for a ship comprises a radial flow impeller 3 provided in a horizontal transverse conduit 2 within the ship with its axis of rotation lying in or parallel to the vertical plane of the longitudinal centre line of the ship and including control vanes 7, 8 shiftable coaxially with the rotational axis of the impeller to reverse the direction of thrust without reversing the direction of rotation of the impeller. In the embodiment shown, the axis of rotation 5 of the impeller is vertical. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown), the axis is horizontal.
