Abstract

1,156,983. Plastics compositions. E. W. CLARKE. 30 Sept., 1966 [30 Sept., 1965], No. 43751/66. Headings C3P and C3R. [Also in Division C5] A plastics composition comprises a thermoplastic polymer, e.g. nylon, polycarbonate or polytetrafluoroethylene, and a minor proportion e.g. 5 to 30% by weight, of a "carboid" additive made by distilling a de-salted coal- or oil-tar, see Division C5. Plasticizers and fillers may be incorporated, e.g. clay, and a powdered metal, e.g. copper or stainless steel, in amounts of 40 to 55% by weight of the composition. A polymerization initiator, e.g. cobalt naphthenate, is included in the pitch obtained by the distilling step, and an antioxidant, e.g. tocopherol, may be added to the pitch. Tables I, III, IV and V describe nylon 66 or 6 compositions containing various combinations of phenoxy resin, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, “ inch chopped glass fibre, the "carboid", polyethylene, various "carbowaxes" (Registered Trade Mark), polyacetal, chlorinated polyether, copper or stainless steel powder and P.T.F.E. of below 15 micron particle size. Table 2 describes poly-bisphenol A carbonate compositions all containing the "carboid", a phenoxy resin and polyethylene and one of various "Carbowaxes" on a copolymer of vinyl acetate and vinyl chloride or ethylene.
