Abstract

1,156,658. Rolling. R. B. SIMS. 19 Aug., 1966 [24 Aug., 1965; 13 Jan., 1966], Nos. 36190/65 and 1592/66. Heading B3M. [Also in Division G3] A rolling mill includes a pair of roll assemblies which are separated by spacers and urged together by a constant prestressing force, the spacers being automatically adjusted to provide a constant roll gap. The spacers 7 are threaded into an upper chock 3 at each side of the mill, and bear against a lower chock 2. Rotation of the spacers by means of motor-driven gear 11 adjusts the spacing between the chocks 2 and 3, and hence the roll gap. The pressure of the prestressing fluid is automatically maintained constant during rolling by means of an adjustable relief valve 27, the pressure being controlled such that the load on the spacers 7 is held at the middle of their permissible load range. A prestressing cylinder 6 is provided with hydraulic pressure fluid from either a low pressure pump 20 and associated accumulator 23, or from a high pressure pump 26 and accumulator 28. The high pressure fluid is supplied when a workpiece is sensed as being present between the rolls by means of rolling load sensors 18. An amplifier 25, which is responsive to the outputs of the sensors operates switches 22A, 24 and 27 which determine whether high or low pressure fluid is supplied. To control the mill, the prestressing pressure is measured by a gauge 30, the difference between prestressing and rolling loads by sensors 18, and of the position of the screws by sensors 19. Using these values, plus a desired gauge roll gap value set at 35, an amplifier 36 provides an output corresponding to the gauge error. The output is used to control a motor 14 to vary the spacer settings. The values of gauge error, mill speed and load on the spacers, are fed to a control system (Fig. 2, not shown) where the values are compared with reference values. Thus the prestressing pressure is arranged to be varied only when the mill speed is greater than a predetermined figure and when the gauge error is less than a predetermined value. When these conditions do not apply the gauge control system using the spacers is disabled, and the spacers are adjusted to bring the load on the spacers within the specified range.
