821,879. Rolling. BALDWIN - LIMA - HAMILTON CORPORATION. Jan. 10, 1957 [Jan. 11, 1956], No. 1058/57. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXIX] In a method of rolling sheet-metal between working rolls 13, 14 backed by backing-rolls 11, 12, the thickness is maintained constant across the width by varying the spacing between the chocks 15, 16 of the working rolls in accordance with variation in the working loads. In a mill for rolling tapered sheet in which the pass is continuously varied by screw-downs 10a engaging chocks 11a of the upper backing roll 11 the chocks 15, 16 of the working rolls are forced apart by hydraulic jacks 17, the pressure of which is varied according to the rolling loads and measured by an electrical strain gauge 30 on the mill frame 10. The strain gauge controls the applied pressure through a combined electric and hydraulic servo system.
