Abstract

1,156,423. Collapsible steering columns. S.T.O. SERVICES Ltd. 8 May, 1968 [8 Feb., 1967; 1 March, 1967], Nos. 5922/67 and 9662/67. Heading B7H. [Also in Division F2] A collapsible steering outer column comprises two coaxial metal tubes 12, 13 of different diameters connected together in such a manner that when an excessive axial compressive force is applied, the material of the wall of one or each tube, which is of ductile metal, rolls back on itself in the manner of a rolling diaphragm thereby absorbing energy. One of the tubes may be made more readily deformable than the other by suitable selection of the wall thickness or the provision of tapered or parallel sided slots 16. In Fig. 2 the tube 13 has outturned end portions 15, of the resultant tongues 17, which are secured to the other tube 12. In Fig. 7, the deformable tube 22 is a sleeve secured to a third tube 18 and is secured intermediate the ends of another tube 20 by its turned back tongue ends 25. The column may comprise three tube sections 12, 13, 14 with two deformable portions surrounding a steerng shaft 9 (Fig. 1) and may carry one or spaced bearing sleeves for the steering shaft and/or steering wheel.
