Abstract

1,156,265. Desulphurizing heavy oils. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 18 March, 1968, No. 12921/68. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C5] Heavy oils containing at least one weight per cent of sulphur are first separated into two fractions, the first fraction having a relatively low sulphur content and comprising 50-95 volume per cent of the feedstock, and the second fraction having a relatively high sulphur content and comprising 5-50 volume, per cent of the feedstock; the first fraction is hydrodesulphurized in the presence of a catalyst to form a desulphurized oil product and hydrogen sulphide, and the second fraction is burnt to yield a flue gas containing sulphur dioxide, sulphur being recovered from the system by reacting the hydrogen sulphide with the sulphur dioxide contained in the flue gas to yield elemental sulphur. Alternatively the hydrogen sulphide may be combusted along with the second fraction to form sulphur dioxide in the flue gas and the sulphur extracted, not necessarily in elemental form, from the flue gas by known methods. Suitable feedstock heavy oils include atmospheric residuum, vacuum residuum, unbreaker bottoms, thermal cracker bottoms, cycle stocks, shale oils and mixtures thereof. Separation techniques which may be used include vacuum distillation, coking and solvent extraction. Suitable solvents for the latter are HF, BF 3 , HF/BF 3 complexes, phenols, propane, butane, propane-butane mixtures, pentane, hexane, heptane, naphtha and mixtures of C 2 -,C 8 paraffinic hydrocarbons. The high sulphur content fraction from the separation contains essentially all the metal and asphaltene impurities present in the initial feedstock.
