Abstract

1,154,504. Paints. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 13 Oct., 1967 [24 Oct., 1966], No. 47607/66. Headings C3P and C3Q. A process for painting a road comprises the application at 30-150‹ C. of a paint composition, wherein the pigment binder comprises a film-forming chlorinated polymer, and the solvent is one or more organic solvents having a boiling point in the range of 35‹ C. to 150‹ C. The polymer may be a chlorinated rubber of more than 64% by weight chlorine, a chlorinated polyethylene of more than 65% chlorine, a chlorinated polyvinyl chloride of 62% to 65% chlorine, or a chlorinated polypropylene, and the polymer has a viscosity that is preferably in the range of 5 to 30 centipoises. The pigment binder may contain additives such as a liquid plasticizer, a solid chlorinated paraffin-wax, a drying oil, a non-drying oil, an oil-modified natural or synthetic resin, a coarse extender, a stabilizer or a suspending agent. The solvent may be an aromatic hydrocarbon, ketone, aliphatic hydrocarbon, ester, alcohol or a chlorinated hydrocarbon, in particular methylene chloride, trichloroethylene or 1: 1: 1-trichloroethane. Suitable compositions exemplified comprise a chlorinated rubber, a chlorinated paraffin wax, inorganic pigments (titanium dioxide or a titanium calcium pigment), an extender (china clay, barytes, a fibrous talc or diatomaceous earths), a stabilizer (epichlorohydrin and tung oil/resin-modified pentaerythritol esterified phenolic resin) and a solvent (a mixture of toluene and trichloroethylene or methyl ethyl ketone).
