Abstract

1,154,209. Electroviscous composition. TEXTRON ELECTRONICS, Inc. 28 July, 1966 [2 Aug., 1965], No. 34039/66. Heading C1A. [Also in Divisions C3 and C5] An electroviscous composition comprises (a) a finely divided non-conductive solid with a mean particle diameter #0À1 Á, (b) a hydrogenbonding acid, (c) a hydrogen-bonding base, and (d) a low dielectric liquid vehicle, the amount of the acid and of the base each being at least 1% by wt. of the solid and the total amount of the solid, acid and base not exceeding 35% by wt. of the composition, said composition having an effective viscosity, when subjected to an electric field of 100 volts per mil at a shear rate of 1000 sec<SP>-1</SP>, of at least 100 times its viscosity in the absence of the field. The liquid vehicle may be a mineral or fatty oil, xylene, CCl 4 , a fluorocarbon or a silicone oil. The non-conductive solid may be pyrogenic silica or corundum. The hydrogenbonding acid may be acetic, formic, lactic, malic, malonic, octanoic, oxalic, pyruvic, or trichloracetic acid. The hydrogen-bonding base may be an alcohol, amide, amino, ketone, phenol, pyridine or NH 4 OH. The electroviscous composition may be prepared by developing an electric charge on the particles of the non- conductive solid, coating the particles with the acid and base and dispering the coated particles in the liquid vehicle.
