Abstract

1,154,073. Blending ceramic and carrier fibres. JOHNS - MANVILLE CORP. 8 Aug., 1967 [24 Aug., 1966], No. 36257/67. Headings D1F and D1N. Ceramic and carrier fibres are blended into a layer by juxtapositioning ceramic fibres 23 with a supply of carrier fibres 28 to form a composite web 30, distending the composite web, projecting the distended fibers into an air stream in chamber 40, and condensing the fibres into a layer on drum 42 such that the ceramic and carrier fibres are randomly dispersed in the layer. The ceramic fibres are preferably sprayed with a lubricating agent before passing up a pin lifting apron 16, which serves.to separate the agglomerates of the ceramic fibres, before being delivered onto conveyor 24 by doffer 22. The layer 60 from drum 42 is preferably combined with an additional carrier layer prior to further carding to form a sliver which is thereafter twisted. Several such twisted slivers form a unit which has twist applied to it in a direction opposite to the twist of each individual sliver.
