Abstract

1,154,045. Suction cleaners. ELECTROLUX Ltd. 25 Nov., 1966 [26 Oct., 1966], No. 52802/66. Heading A4F. In a suction cleaner of the type having an elongated handle 9 pivoted to a casing 1 movable over the surface to be cleaned, means is provided for resisting downward manual movement of the handle over a given arc, the resistance being sufficient to cause lifting of the front end of the casing 1 but insufficient to prevent continuation of the downward manual movement through and beyond the arc. The pivotal connection of the handle 9 to the casing 1 includes a tubular T-piece 8 secured to the handle 9 and pivotable about an axis A in bearing members 8B (Fig. 2, not shown) fixed to the casing 1. Mounted on a rotatable shaft 5, carried by the casing 1, is a nose 12 urged by a spring 6 (not shown) into engagement with a stop 10 on the member 8 to hold the handle 9 in an upright position. The nose 12 may be retracted from the stop 10 by momentarily depressing a pedal 5c (not shown) to permit the handle 9 to be swung downwardly. The nose 12 is returned into engagement with a cam surface 11A on the member 8, and as the handle 9 is moved downwardly a steeper cam surface 11A engages the nose 12 and provides sufficient resistance to movement of the handle to cause the front end 1B of the casing 1 to be raised. If sufficient pressure is applied to the handle, the nose 12 rides over the cam surface 11B, and the handle 9 can be moved to a horizontal position.
