Abstract

1,153,200. Alkaline earth metal carbonate dispersions. CHEVRON RESEARCH CO. 1 Aug., 1967, No. 35384/67. Heading CIA. [Also in Division C5F] A dispersion of barium or calcium carbonate in a hydrocarbon diluent is prepared by mixing the corresponding oxide with methanol in a hydrocarbon diluent, the mole ratio of methanol: CaO or BaO being less than 5:1 and the total amount of hydrocarbon diluent initially present being in an amount to provide an oxide dispersion of from 5-20 weight per cent adding CO 2 to this dispersion in an amount from 10 to 50% of the stoichiometric amount necessary to convert the oxide to the carbonate, introducing into the metal a dispersing agent comprising a carboxylic acid having from 12 to not more than 75 carbon atoms or calcium or barium salt thereof, the mole ratio of oxide to carboxylate in the mixture being at least 5: 1 and then continuing the addition of CO 2 until the gas is no longer absorbed, water is then added to the mixture and the mixture heated until all of the water has distilled off, and the desired dispersion isolated. Preferably the water is added in the form of steam and the mixture is steam distilled. Water may be present in the initial mixture to the extent of 3 mol. per cent based on the alkaline earth metal oxide content. If desired, from 0 to 80 mole per cent of the carboxylic acid or its salt may be replaced by an organic acid sulphonate having from 20-100 carbon atoms. Preferred ratios of methanol; oxide and oxide: dispersing agent are 2 to 4: 1 and 1: 5 to 15. The dispersion may be added to lubricating oils.
