Abstract

673,903. Grinding-machines. DANDO, S. L. Aug. 24, 1950 [Aug. 24, 1949; April 20, 1950], Nos. 22026/49 and 9773/50. Class 60. A grinding machine comprises a headstock 14 having a rotatable spindle 17 mounted for angular adjustment about an axis 21 and a rotatable grinding wheel 41 carried by an upper carriage 36 and a lower carriage 22, each carriage being mounted both for angular adjustment about an axis parallel to the axis 21 and for linear adjustment in a plane perpendicular to the latter. The work spindle 17 is driven by a two-speed motor 19 through bevel gears and a shaft co-axial with the axis 21. The headstock is set by a scale 15 and secured by a locking screw 16. The lower carriage 22 is angularly adjustable on a base 12 by means of a handwheel 20 and a screwed rod and is provided with a dovetail slideway 26 along which a mounting 25 is adjustable by a second screwed rod 27 driven through gears 28, a shaft 29 and a handwheel 32. The upper carriage 36 is angularly adjustable on the mounting 25 and is also provided with a dovetail slide along which a carriage 35 is adjustable. The grinding wheel housing 42 is angularly adjustable on the latter carriage and supports the wheel and its motor 43. Scales and locking screws are provided for each of the angular adjustments. The machine may be used for cylindrical or conical work and large workpieces may be treated by turning the headstock through 90‹ so that the plane of rotation of the workpiece is along the length of the machine. Fig. 3 shows the machine equipped with a tailstock 50 supported by a cross slide 65 and an angular adjustment 66 from a bar 51. The latter forms a slideway for a sleeve 61 which is provided with a key to prevent it from turning and a clamp 62 to hold it in adjusted position. Uprights 52, 53 adjustable in arcuate slots having their centre on the axis of adjustment of the headstock allow the bar 51 to be aligned with the headstock. When the tailstock is not required, the uprights are swung about hinge joints 67, 68 to an inclined position at the rear of the machine. Facing operations may also be carried out and a cup wheel or a wheel rotating about a vertical axis may be used. The machine may be constructed so that the axis of rotation of the work is vertical.
