A series of flat articles A are conveyed by an input conveyer 10, an intermediate conveyer 11 and an output conveyer 12 substantially without disorientation of the articles. The conveyer 12 includes a fine orientation section 13. Conveyer 10 comprises three endless belts 18 each having hold-down rollers 21, 21a which are adjustable, longitudinally of the belts, on rails 20. Conveyer 11 comprises rollers 24 driven by a belt (28) threaded over the rollers 24 and over idler rollers (29), Fig. 2 (not shown). Some driven rollers 24a are extended to support articles of extra width. Hold-down roller assemblies 34, in addition to being adjustable longitudinally of tracks 33, are vertically adjustable and are biased downwardly by springs (42), Fig. 4 (not shown). This conveyer also has hold-down rollers 40a, 40b. The output conveyer 12, with hold-down rollers 53, 53a, has rollers 50 driven at variable speed and independently of the conveyers 10, 11. Section 13 of the output conveyer includes a wall 62 for fine alignment of the articles, the wall carrying resiliently mounted rollers 67 whose axes are at an angle with respect to axles 57, 58 of rollers 55, 56 which support three endless belts 59. The wall 62 may be adjusted laterally. Before operation, the hold-down rollers 21 are adjusted such that their spacing from the rollers 40a is " D," i.e. is substantially identical to the length of the articles A. In a similar way the distance " W " between roller assemblies 53A and 40B is made equal to the width of the articles. By these adjustments, an article is simultaneously released from the control of one conveyer and transferred to the control of the succeeding conveyer. To avoid overlapping of the articles, if the length of an article is twice its width, the speed of the article on the output conveyer 12 must be at least one half as great as that of the input conveyer 10. The conveyers may all be of the belt type or all roller conveyers.
