Abstract

1,148,512. Sintered electrodes. ROBERT BOSCH G.m.b.H. 6 July, 1966 [20 July, 1965], No. 30352/66. Heading H1B. [Also in Division C7] Sintered catalyst electrodes e.g. for use in fuel cells, are made by compacting and sintering a powder mixture of a " Raney" (Registered Trade Mark) palladium alloy containing a soluble metal component, nickel and silver followed by leaching out the soluble component of the palladium alloy. The silver is preferably formed in situ :in the mixture by thermal decomposition of silver carbonate. Ammonium or sodium carbonate or bicarbonate may be added to the mixture as a pore former and the nickel may be formed in situ by decomposition of nickel carbonyl. The palladium alloys may be PdAl 3 or PdAl 4 or mixed alloys with Ag, Ni and Mn. The mixture is pressed and sintered or hot pressed and a composite body may be formed by pressing together a powder layer of the mixture and a layer of nickel powder and sodium carbonate and an intermediate layer of nickel, silver carbonate and sodium carbonate. An outer layer of nickel may also be formed. The mixture may also be pressed and sintered on a carrier of nickel foil attached to nickel gauze.
