Abstract

[Also in Division B2] In a grinding plant, material, passed through coarse and fine grinding chambers, is screened and the grit returned for re-grinding to the two chambers in proportions which are varied automatically if the noise in the coarse grinding chamber is above or below predetermined limits, the rate of supply of fresh material also being automatically controlled by the noise in the coarse grinding chamber. As shown, a feeder 9 driven by a motor 10 supplies material to a grinder 1 having a coarse grinding chamber 2 and a fine grinding chamber 3, the ground material being transported by a bucket-conveyer 4 to screens 5 and 6 supplying finished material at 7. Grit is returned from screen 6 to the fine grinding chamber 3 while that from screen 5 is apportioned between the fine and coarse grinding chambers in dependence on the setting of a distribution valve operated by a motor 8. The rate of supply of ground material by conveyer 4 is maintained constant by comparing the power supplied to its driving motor 15, as measured at 16, with a reference value at 14 so that any difference is effective to alter at 11 the level of sound maintained constant in the coarse grinding chamber by a microphone 12 controlling the speed of feed motor 10. Deviations in the output of microphone 12 beyond predetermined limits determined by a dead band unit 18 are effective to adjust the position of the distribution valve controlled by motor 8 so as to prevent overloading or underloading of the coarse grinding chamber. Grit output instead of grinder output may control the sound level.
