[Also in Division A3] A turnover at a fabric edge as a preliminary to folding the fabric at the turnover and then hemstitching the turnover is made by securing to the back of the fabric a thin stiffening strip which is marked by a line of weakness, cutting the fabric adjacent the line of weakness and then turning over the thus cut edge of the fabric and of the strip about the line of weakness. To form a pocket in a pair of trousers made from a wool fabric 1, a stiffening strip 2 comprising a thin thermoplastic strip is hot-pressed on to the back of the fabric in the region in which a pocket is to be stitched thereto. Alternatively, the strip 2 may comprise a thin cotton fabric fixed to the fabric 1 by a special adhesive. Lines of weakness 2<SP>1</SP>, 2<SP>11</SP> are formed in the strip 2 prior to adhesion thereof to the fabric 1 to indicate the lines along which the fabric is to be folded. Small interruptions 2<SP>111</SP> are provided in the lines 2<SP>1</SP>, 2<SP>11</SP> to prevent slipping or shifting of the strip 2 on application to the fabric 1. After adhesion of the strip 2, a cut 3 with small cuts 4 perpendicular thereto is made through the fabric 1 and the strip 2 to form the pocket opening. The cuts 3, 4 in the strip 2 may be formed before the strip is secured to the fabric 1 or marking lines may be applied to the strip 2 to indicate the position of these cuts. The edges (5), (6), Fig. 4 (not shown), on both sides of the cut 3 are folded over inwardly along the lines 21, 2<SP>11</SP>. A pocket 7, Fig. 6, having parts 7<SP>1</SP>, 7<SP>11</SP> reinforced by strips 8, 9 is stitched to the folded edges (5), (6).
