In an apparatus for distributing comminuted tobacco, such as fragmented tobacco leaves or tobacco leaf particles, tobacco 2 is removed from a supply container 1 by paddles 12, compacted at constant pressure by tamping members 18, conveyed after compacing by a spiked roll 4 on which it is adjusted to a constant thickness by another spiked roll 6 rotating as shown by the arrows, and then beaten out of the spaces between the spikes 7 of the roll 4 by a beater roll 43 and thence projected by a winnower roll 44 on to a conveyer 46 which feeds it to a tobacco duct wherein it forms a fleece. A pin roll 16 feeds tobacco from the top edge of the supply down to the paddles 12. The tamping members 18 are each actuated by an eccentrically mounted cam 28, the cams 28 being disposed offset relatively to each other so that adjacent tamping members 18 operate out of phase with each other. Two micro limit switches, connected in series and actuated by stop members 31 rigidly connected to two of the tamping member (18a, 18b) actuation mechanisms, cause the tobacco 2 to be fed forward on a conveyer belt 3 for a preset time whenever the level of tobacco beneath the members (18a, 18b) falls below a preset level. In another embodiment, three parallel tobacco supplies feeding a single spiked roll (104) is each controlled separately by one of its associated tamping members (118a, 118b and 118c respectively).
