Abstract

1,147,134. Apparatus for retreading tyres. HILL BENTHAM ENG. CO. Ltd. 7 March, 1968 [7 March, 1967], No. 10610/67. Heading B7C. Tyre retreading apparatus comprises a frame 2-5 provided with an arm 10 and discs 8, (9) for supporting a tyre to be retreaded, the tyre being rotatable by an appropriate drive mechanism, and flexible rotatable stitching rollers 22, 29, 30 extending from the frame which are capable of assuming the peripheral contour of the tyre to be retreaded. The arm 10 having disc 8 at its end may be moved towards and away from disc (9) which is connected to transmission unit 12 and may be provided with an axial bore for supply of air to the tyre for inflating it. The stitching rollers may be mounted on a carriage which is movable towards and away from the tyre by means of a piston- and-cylinder arrangement 16, and may be either solid or inflatable. A tread rubber centring device 25 may be provided on the carriage. In operation, a tyre 6 is clamped between discs 8 and (9), inflated to the desired pressure, and a tread strip is applied to the tyre. The piston 17 of the piston-and-cylinder arrangement 16 is operated to bring the stitching rollers into contact with the applied tread strip at the appropriate pressure, and the motor is actuated to rotate the tyre and tread strip in contact with the rollers for the required length of time. In a modification (Figs. 4, 5, 6), the tyre to be retreaded is mounted within a frame which is pivotable about a horizontal axis. In further modifications (Figs. 7, 8) a single stitching roller may be used.
