Abstract
1,146,911. Continuous-casting machines. A. R. WAGNER. 24 March, 1966 [27 March, 1965], No. 13086/66. Heading B3F. A method of continuously casting molten metal comprises continually producing a substantially vertical tubular metallic envelope, pouring molten metal into the upper open end of the envelope and moving the envelope and solidifying metal therein downwards at a rate corresponding to the rate of pouring and to the rate of production of the envelope. The envelope is formed by feeding metal sheet 2 from drum 5 and welding the edges together. The envelope and molten metal are guided by rollers 7, 8, the first set of rollers 7 being only slightly cooled by spray nozzles 4a and the subsequent rollers 8 being cooled to a greater extent by nozzles 4b, for example by steam, sufficient to preserve the strength of the envelope but without solidifying the molten core 9 so that axial rather than radial solidification is achieved. The metal of the envelope may be the same as or different to the molten metal and may be permanently retained on the solidified casting or be removed. Oxides, oxide solvents and inert gas degassing techniques may be used to prevent or ensure adhesion of the envelope to the casting as required.
